In July 2015, President Obama launched ConnectHome, a pilot initiative with communities, the private sector, and the federal government that seeks to accelerate the adoption and utilization of broadband technology by children and families living in assisted housing. HUD Secretary Julian Castro visited San Antonio to name the city as one of 28 pilot communities that will help to reach over 275,000 low-income households – and nearly 200,000 children – with the support they need to access the Internet at home.
SAHA and partners are leading the effort to bridge the digital divide at SAHA communities and will roll out ConnectHome in three phases: develop community-specific partnerships and strategies, starting with five pilot communities; conduct digital literacy and related computer training; and, pursue incremental and expanding connectivity, including the installation of Google Fiber into units. In February 2016, Google Fiber announced that select communities in San Antonio will receive 1,000 megabits per second internet service as part of the ConnectHome initiative.
