Voucher Programs

Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program, commonly known as the “Section 8” program, provides housing assistance in the form of vouchers to families. “Special Programs” include voucher programs for certain target groups, such as veterans.

HOUSING PROGRAMS

HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER (HCV) PROGRAM

Opportunity Home’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program offers the opportunity for low-income families to rent from a landlord in the private rental market. A family issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit where the owner agrees to rent under the program.

EMERGENCY HOUSING VOUCHERS

Opportunity Home has a limited number of Emergency Housing Vouchers (EHVs), which are special-purpose vouchers to assist individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness, at risk of homelessness, fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking or human trafficking or were recently homeless and providing rental assistance will prevent the family’s homelessness or having high risk of housing instability.

The EHV Program is a collaboration between Opportunity Home and the South Alamo Regional Alliance for the Homeless (SARAH). EHVs can only be provided to families referred by a homeless service provider or case manager. If you aren’t currently working with a service provider, contact a Homelink Access Point or Homeless Connections Hotline at 210.207.1799 for a Coordinated Entry assessment to determine your eligibility.

For more information about Opportunity Home’s EHVs, please view our Frequently Asked Questions here.

SET ASIDE HOMELESS VOUCHER (SHVP) PROGRAM

The Set Aside Homeless Voucher Program (SHVP) provides voucher assistance to homeless individuals through a collaborative referral process with case management and supportive services provided by the Center for Health Care Services (CHCS) and San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries (SAMM). Once referred to Opportunity Home, information provided by the applicant will be verified for accuracy and eligibility.

MAINSTREAM PROGRAM

Since 1998, Opportunity Home has administered Mainstream vouchers in the city to assist non-elderly persons with disabilities. Residents are connected with health organizations to ensure they receive the quality care they need.

HUD-VETERANS AFFAIRS SUPPORTIVE HOUSING (HUD-VASH) PROGRAM

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program for homeless veterans combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at VA medical centers and community-based outreach clinics. Homeless veterans are screened by the VA and then referred to Opportunity Home. Individuals interested in the program should contact the local VA office at 210.616.9915.

MODERATE REHABILITATION (MOD-REHAB) PROGRAM

The Moderate Rehabilitation (MOD-Rehab) Program provides project-based rental assistance for low-income families. Assistance is limited to properties previously rehabilitated pursuant to a Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) Contract between an owner and Opportunity Home. Individuals interested in this program must apply through the online application.
