SAHA Receives National Recognition for Resident Initiatives, Design of Housing Developments

Sweeping the nation with the largest number of awards for innovative programs and initiatives for the third consecutive year, the San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) is the recipient of 21 Merit Awards and five Awards of Excellence nominations from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO), the most trusted affordable housing trade association in the country.
“I’m proud to see SAHA garner national attention for key initiatives that have improved the quality of life for residents in San Antonio, SAHA has dedicated staff who design and implement programs with residents in mind.” said David Nisivoccia, SAHA President and CEO.
The Merit Awards are awarded to member agencies who showcase innovative programs and winners are featured during the NAHRO Summer Conference.
Recognized efforts include the Garcia Street Urban Farm, built on the Eastside with a food desert designation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture; the grand opening of Phillis Wheatley Park, a one-acre recreational area located at the center of East Meadows on the site of the former Wheatley Courts; and SAHA’s Jobs Plus Program, instrumental in connecting residents to training and new career opportunities.
Of more than 3,000 public housing authorities in the country, SAHA received the largest nominations for Awards of Excellence than any other housing authority. The Awards of Excellence nominates organizations from among the Award of Merit winners each year, these awards are chosen by national juries and presented at the annual National Conference and Exhibition. The awards represent the very best in innovative programs in assisted housing and community development.
The Garcia Street Urban Farm and Phillis Wheatley Park are among the nominations for Awards of Excellence. Juries are currently reviewing the nominations and will announce winners in late August.
