SAHA Resident, Graduate Celebrates Amid Pandemic

This year, traditional graduation ceremonies are unlike any other as seniors are celebrating a life milestone amid a global pandemic. SAHA student resident and 2020 Lanier High School graduate, Jahzariah Allen, says she has waited to celebrate this moment since freshman year.

“We will receive our diplomas in the mail, but it’s not the same. My family isn’t able to see me walk the stage,” Allen said. “Experiencing the senior activities with teachers and friends, senior day, senior trips, senior traditions — I missed those opportunities.”

Despite missing the high school traditions, Allen said she has to be strong for her five younger siblings who look up to her as a role model.

“I will be the first to go to college in my family. Since I was young, my parents always pushed education,” Allen said. “I want to pave the way for my siblings to follow in my footsteps.”

Allen says she will be attending San Antonio College in the fall to pursue a degree in nursing and wishes to work in pediatrics.

“The further education you have, the further you can have the life you want,” Allen said.
