San Antonio public housing resident writes children’s book

San Antonio public housing resident challenges stereotypes, overcomes trauma to write a children’s book

Johana Lizeth Hernandez rhymes a lot. She’s not always aware of it. At least not until a line tumbles out of her mouth and someone responds in appreciation, especially children.

“Without unity, you can’t have a community,” she says at one point in our conversation.

After telling me her story about growing up in and continuing to live in public housing — and the beautiful, heartbreaking and traumatizing experiences she had there — she offers up a bit of alliterative self-reflection.

“Allow your mess to be your message.”
